Another billion-dollar move by Google.
(This makes three billion and counting )
Google is doubling down on Anthropic. Four sources told the Financial Times that Google has invested another $1 billion into the company, bringing their total investment to over $3 billion.
Anthropic’s Claude AI models are already integrated into Google’s Vertex AI platform, powering next-gen AI development.
But they’re not alone.
Amazon has poured $4 billion into Anthropic to use Claude in Alexa’s future iterations. Rumor has it that Lightspeed Venture Partners is in talks to fund another $2 billion. This would skyrocket Anthropic’s valuation to $60 billion.
(And yet, no one’s expecting profitability anytime soon. Developing AI isn’t cheap.)
Google invented transformers—the foundational tech behind today’s AI models—back in 2017. Despite some hits like Gemini, Imagen, and more, their position in generative AI isn’t as dominant as they’d like.
Meanwhile, this flood of Big Tech investments in AI startups is raising eyebrows. The FTC scrutinized Google’s initial $2.3 billion bet on Anthropic, citing antitrust concerns. But with a shift in FTC leadership, the scrutiny on deals like this might loosen up.
Big money. Big moves. Bigger AI battles ahead.
