OpenAI is considering ads—according to the Financial Times.
Their CFO, Sarah Friar, hinted at an ad business model, but quickly clarified: “No active plans yet.”
Still, the idea’s gaining traction. The cost of running generative AI models? Sky-high. And subscription revenues might not cut it forever.
But here’s the kicker:
Sam Altman, OpenAI’s founder, doesn’t love ads. During a Harvard chat, he called them a “last resort” and said: “Ads-plus-AI feels uniquely unsettling to me.”
Unsettling or not, OpenAI recently hired Shivakumar Venkataraman, a former Google ads exec.
Coincidence? Maybe. But don’t be surprised if your ChatGPT session features a little “sponsored suggestion” in the future.
